A New Elegie

In memory of the Right Valiant and Most Renowned Souldier Col. Rainsborough late Admiral of the Narrow Seas. Published November 1648. The colonel was an active land officer as well as an admiral. He fought at Naseby and many other places with distinction, took part in the Putney debates and was finally killed by marauding Cavaliers in Doncaster, who were looking for a high ranking prisoner for exchange. Simply drawn, but Rainsborough seems to be wearing a high waisted, many tabbed doublet and a buttoned cloak with no sleeves.
