Bit early for the 1640s but I love this painting, also from the Colchester and Ipswich collection. This upper class, pre-breeches lad is sumptuously dressed in a silk brocade slashed doublet and petticoat with a nice lace band, matching cuffs, wide brimmed hat and red shoes.

A Most Certain Strange and True Discovery
of a Witch. Being taken by some of the Parliament Forces as she was standing on a small plank board and sailing on it over the River of Newbury. Nice piece of reportage from 1643. Whether she was a witch, we’ll never know, but she is wearing an untied coif, bodice, petticote, kerchief and apron. The cuffs of her smock are visible too. No shoes though.
