Sir Philip Herbert

Engraved by Hollar from a van Dyck portrait painted sometime in the 1630s, Sir Philip was a courtier before the war and a moderate parliamentarian during hostilities. He’s wearing garter regalia, his George on a ribbon around his neck and the cloak just off his left shoulder. Underneath he is wearing a satin doublet with slashed sleeves and a very fine lace edging to his falling band. © The Trustees of the British Museum
