Painted by the Scots painter George Jameson in 1636. The Earl Marischal had a chequered career in the civil war, being generally inactive due to various personal grievances and the complexities of Scottish politics but he did raise a regiment in 1644 that served as part of the Scots army in England for three years.
He is pictured here before hostilities commenced dressed simply in a black satin doublet with slashed sleeves and a plan wide falling band. The clothes are none the less high quality as befits the Sixth Earl. The portrait in is the collection of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh.
